Should volunteer golf club directors be paid?

Interesting to follow the current debate on the staff crisis in the golf industry. Its driven by two factors- the first is the recruitment and ongoing training of golf club staff at every level is poor, as is the pay. If we don’t recognise the value of people, then they won’t recognise the value of a career in golf.

The second is the employee management or lack of it which so many golf clubs seem to suffer from. The private golf clubs sector seems to bear the brunt of the criticism, with volunteer directors singled out as often poorly equipped to run a business. But the clue is in the name-volunteers- who have often had their arm twisted to even stand on the committee. Those within the golf club who have the necessary skills run a mile and frankly who can blame them.

Whilst I fully support the debate to better value and reward employees, is it not time for some investment into the heart of what we think is the problem, volunteer directors.

  • Should we be recruiting NEDS from outside the club or even the industry to bring new thinking and non-emotive decision making and happy to spend a few hours a month supporting a business?

  • Should volunteer directors be paid?

  • Is there a form of ‘membership’ package for volunteer directors, recruited professionally against a skillset and held to account?

In defence of private member golf club Chairs, many are battling with a lack of volunteers, poor skills and a fear of upsetting their peers. We can debate the topic all we like but until golf clubs are encouraged to adopt some radical thinking and change then it will continue with future generation of volunteers- if there are any!
